CHRISTIAN MARCUM
BIOGRAPHY
Christian Marcum (b.1992 in Phoenix, AZ) is a documentary and fine art photographer based in Arizona. He has a BA in Strategic Visual Communication from Northern Arizona University where he studied Photography, Cinema Production, and Graphic Design with an Emphasis in Advertising. He currently works exclusively in black and white — film and wet plate, 35mm and 4×5 — dedicated to long-term photo essays, alternative processes and darkroom techniques. His practice extends into bookmaking and printmaking, each discipline in service of a single pursuit: the image, and what it asks of you.
At the center of his work is a belief in the candid moment — not as something to be hunted or sought out, but witnessed and listened to. A photograph, for Christian, is never made alone. It is a collaboration between reality, the camera, and the person who will eventually stand before the print. Each plays a role. None is fully in control. That tension is not a problem to solve — it is the work itself.
He holds no illusion that photography captures the truth of a moment. Reality is too nuanced, too layered, too indifferent to the parameters within a frame. But in the honest attempt to meet it — to slow down, to look, to choose — something real does emerge. Not a copy of the world, but a record of the encounter with it. That is the journey every photographer must eventually accept, and more than accept, learn to love.
He started Film is Dead Studio LLC (est. 2016) as a statement of intent. The name is deliberate: a nod to the belief that film and historical photographic processes are obsolete, and a quiet refusal of that idea. In an age of digital immediacy, he works in a process that demands patience and trust in the unseen. There is no preview — only the decision to press the shutter, and then to wait for the miracle of light and silver to reveal it's magic.
His work has been published, exhibited, and recognized nationally and internationally. He approaches his work with humility, and with the conviction that the beauty of photography is not in the certainty of what you find — it is in the willingness to keep looking, and to keep listening.
